Navigating the food system…

Food is not a math equation, Eat for your body!

My food journey began at 16. I spent the summer in California and discovered vegetables, seafood, new cuisines, and the flavors of the world. My palette was awakened and my appetite voracious!

By the time I was 19, my curiosity was endless but my budget was minimal. I was hungry to learn how to take basic ingredients and turn them into dishes. I learned how to bake bread, make yogurt, turn cream into butter, and turn a pound of dried beans into a meal that could feed a family.

In 1991, I opened a vegetarian cafe and catering business. I decided on a vegetarian cafe because cooking vegetables has always been my jam, and I lived in a city where BBQ was king and vegetarian was though to be “hippie granola food” In short, there was no competition.

Fast forward to 2012. Some of my pilates clients have food sensitivities. For them shopping was a confusing and digestively problematic I started a weekly program to teach them how to navigate our complicated maze of advertised “good foods” vs “real foods”, as well as simple cooking techniques. This simple weekly guidance grew into a meal prep business that I closed in 2023.

During this decades long food journey, the food industry has changed dramatically. But the money driven marketing creating confusion is the same. Once there is money to be had from a relevant change - free range, organic, grass fed, GMO free - there is a marketing plan to sell you an inferior product.
